Uzès and Le Pont du Gard

Today we headed back north east this time to a town called Uzès, north of Nimes. It was a pretty drive to get there and we had a fabulous day. Our friend Abra had arranged for us to meet two of her friends who live there and we were given the royal tour. Her friends, Katherine and Bert, are both Dutch who spend a good part of the year here. Saturday is market day and the town was full of vendors of all sorts and shoppers. Quite an interesting place to be.

There are also a lot of cafés and restaurants and we had lunch at this place. Uzès certainly met our expectations of a lovely town in Provence.

There is also a Duke of Uzès and he apparently was home in his castle as the flag shows. I'm thinking of getting a flag for my house that I'll have put up whenever I'm home.

Another part of the Duke's place.

This picture shows Katherine, Bert and I trying to sync telephone numbers so that the ladies could wander off separately from the gents. It took a while given I didn't know my French mobile number and her phone was a Dutch number.

Lovely views from the walls in town.

Bert is a motorcycle enthusiast and rebuids them. He has 4 or 5 here and more at home in The Netherlands. The picture is a re-conditioned 1941 Harley Davidson he has re-built. He has put about 16,000 kms on it.

It was a terrific time in Uzès with really nice people as hosts. They recommended we go to see Pont du Gard. It's an almost 2000 years old aqueduct constructed by the Romans to take water to Nimes. It has the distinction of being the world's tallest Roman bridge and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Quite spectular. And the views are something else too.

After this we headed back to Montpellier for dinner. Tomorrow our plan is Carcassone and Narbonne. Both are to the west of Montpellier.
