Exploring in the Loire Valley

From our apartment in Bourges we've spent two days so far exploring parts of the Loire. The river itself is over a thousand kms long running east to west across central France. So we will only see a small part of it. The Loire region is the largest producer of wine in France.

So Sunday ,at the suggestion of the manager here, we started with Sancerre. Sancerre is it's own wine appelation and so we had to try some. Very good. The village of Sancerre is on the top of a hill overlooking surrounding fields of grapes. It too is medieval in character.

A panoranic view from the town.

We also discovered while there a wine fair taking place in a cave! People from all over buying wine by the case. We bought a couple of bottles for consumption back at the apt. A bit different from the Ottawa Wine and Food Show.

The local harvest.

On Monday we headed north west to Blois, another city with a chateau and a cathedral. It's along the Loire and offers some neat picture opportunities.

Deen climbed these stairs

But not these

Also seen at the la maison de magie. These guys appear every hour on the hour for 5 minutes.

From Blois we drove along the river to Amboise. Seen here a random chateau - looks like an interesting summer place....

Amboise too is along the Loire River and has of course a great chateau and an interesting market area.

The Chateau

And after a long day driving and sightseeing we enjoy the Sancerre Blanc in the garden of our apt.

Tomorrow another day of exploring towns in the area.
